Should You Wear Gloves When Using A Hedge Trimmer?

Okay so it’s time to head out into the garden once more and tackle the ever growing hedges that seem to expand whenever you aren’t looking. Depending on how often you manage to get out there to trim them, this job could take anything from a few minutes to a few hours.

Obviously if you have an excessive trim to do you will want to take it in stages. For instance take a first sweep across the hedge and gradually go back and forth until you have it to the depth you want.

We’ve mentioned the idea of wearing gardening gloves in the title of this article. When you started reading you may not have thought they were necessary. But in the example we’ve given you above you are probably starting to realise why we’ve suggested it. If you aren’t used to using a hedge trimmer and you suddenly have to go out and tackle an overwrought hedge, you will be very likely to get blisters on the palms of your hands. This is particularly likely if your hands are very soft.

The best thing to do is to wear some padded gardening gloves while handling the hedge trimmer. Make sure you are comfortable with them and you can still operate the hedge trimmer safely. This should be easy if your gloves aren’t too thick. Obviously if the hedge is prickly or has any items which are prickly and growing through it, you’ll want to be sure your gloves can withstand holding them. It pays to wear safety glasses or goggles as well. It might sound too much but if you have ever had a single leaf fly up and hit you in the eye you will know how much it stings.

It is always far better to buy a decent pair of gardening gloves that cost a bit more than it is to buy a cheap pair. You can handle virtually anything with a good pair of gloves and you will be able to use them in lots of other ways too.

It also makes life easier when it comes to clearing up all the bits of hedge you’ll have trimmed off. Provided you are well organised you can trim the hedge, handle all the clippings and get them all bagged up and ready for garden rubbish collection or the tip.
