Is It Worth Experimenting With Virtual Garden Software?

Most people would probably love to do something new with their garden. Quite often they will formulate their ideas in their head, imagining how certain features and plants would look in specific locations in their garden.

But it isn’t always that easy to imagine what a specific display or alteration to your garden will look like. That is probably why there have been a number of software programs available that enable you to get a better idea of what your ideas will look like in reality.

But are these programs worth investing in? Do they really give you a good idea of what to expect when you turn your ideas into reality?

Obviously programs like this do have their limitations. They do exist in 3D form, but it isn’t the same as walking out into your garden and seeing the design taking shape. However it can depend largely on the quality of the software program you buy. Some of the cheaper ones are not as good – understandably, given the price – but they can give you a basic idea to go by. The more expensive ones will be kitted out with more features, more plants and shrubs to select from, and so on.

It is also worthwhile to think about why you want to use such a program to help you. If you have literally just decided to change your garden and you have no idea at all about how to do it, then it can be extremely helpful to tap in the size of your garden to have a look at what you could achieve with it.

On the other hand, if you already have a good idea of what you want to do then these programs may not be much help to you. When it comes to choosing plants and selecting what will go where there is no substitute for actually getting your hands dirty! After all, you can plonk down your plants in their pots to get the arrangement right and then you can plant them properly.

In the end it depends on whether you want to go on your computer and spend a few hours playing around with a computer program to try out different designs. If you don’t fancy doing that then there is no beating actually getting out there and trying out a number of designs yourself.

If you want to get hold of a computer program, the best place to look is online. You can often pick up a gardening one on a site like eBay for a very good price. Another good place to go is your local computer stores – they often have stands which are full of cheaper computer games and programs. The gardening ones are often included within these selections. You may pay a bit less by shopping around, so be prepared to spend a bit of time having a look first. You might find a particular program that you like more than anything else as well – so why not start looking now?
