No one who has ever picked up a set of hedge clippers can ever have failed to consider the idea of making something amazing with them. But this kind of garden creation is not easy to pull off, and if you want to give it a try you have to have the right kind of hedge and enough room to make it happen as well.
For instance if you have a hedge as a boundary between you and your neighbour, you may not find it particularly easy to figure out how to make a feature out of it. You wouldn’t be able to do something with the whole hedge for instance. You may be able to trim a design out of the side of the hedge you can see though, which is worth bearing in mind.
Another point to think about is that you could have the right type of hedge growing in another spot in your garden. Remember that it isn’t just hedges that are used in this way – bushes, shrubs and all kinds of plants can be trained to provide an eye catching addition to your garden. As such you can create a feature in a flowerbed or somewhere similar, to really get an eye catching alternative to work with.
You don’t have to start from scratch either when you are considering adding a topiary feature to your garden. You can buy frames which you use as a starting point to grow the topiary onto. This is one of the best ways for beginners to get started, because you don’t have to try and grow and tame a hedge or bush into the shape you want.
Of course, while some experts can create all manner of shapes, animals and other features out of growing plants like this, it doesn’t have to get this complicated if you don’t want it to. A good example would be to create a simple shape from a bush rather than to do anything more elaborate. For instance you could use your hedge trimmers to create a wavy top to your hedge. Alternatively you could add a curved wave that goes along your edge of it – moving in and out as it goes down the garden.
