Batten Down The Hatches In The Garden – It’s Winter Again

Dec 11, 10:26 AM

It’s that time of year when the weather gets worse and we have to think about our gardens in a different way. The time has long gone when we had to give the lawn a final mow before putting away the lawn mower for the last time this year. We shan’t be trimming the hedges again until next year either.

Instead you need to think about your garden in a more practical way. For example is everything that should be put away for the winter now inside the shed, or do you still have one or two things sitting around that need to be moved? Plant pots can easily be picked up by the wind if they aren’t being used, and any collapsible greenhouses should also be packed away for safety now.

This can also be a good time to have a good sweep up and clean your garden paths and patio, if you haven’t already done so. You will need a good day of weather of course, but while you haven’t got as many pots standing around as you would during the summer, it pays to think about doing these kinds of jobs.

Make sure you protect your drains from getting blocked as well by checking the drain covers you have in your back garden. A blocked drain isn’t pleasant at any time of year, but when it is cold and the build up of leaves from the autumn months block it up, you could find yourself outside in dreadful weather trying to solve it.

As you can see it pays to think about your garden in a different way during the winter months. You won’t always benefit from getting a nice view as far as flowers and plants are concerned. But you can at least make sure you have a nice tidy garden to look out on, instead of one that suffers from an excess of dropped leaves and stray empty pots blowing about the place.

You can plan for the better months ahead as well of course. It’s hard to think about the warmth of the summer when you are cold and wrapped up in a thick jumper as you tidy up. But just keep an eye on the potential your garden has for the new season – it gives you something to look forward to during the cold and nasty weather you’ll get before then!
