There is nothing better than sitting and gazing out at your garden when the flowers are in full bloom. Hanging baskets, window boxes, troughs, neatly clipped hedges and bushes, beaming flowerbeds and much more besides – it can all look so stunning if you take good care of it.
We might pray for good weather and the odd drop of rain to provide the perfect conditions to make our flowers and garden grow. But we also need to do our bit. We should make sure we keep on top of the tidying up part – otherwise all that growing will be in vain. It only takes a few minutes a day, but you can really see the difference when you do it.
Take the plants which are steadily coming into flower for example. You will find that they need to be deadheaded frequently – otherwise your nice colourful flowerbed won’t look so nice. Just pull them off gently between your thumb and finger; you should find they come off quite easily. Not only will this make your flowers look nice all the time, it will also make more of them grow. You don’t want the energy going into those dead flowers when they won’t revive. It can go into the rest of the plant and flowers instead.
The same applies with any dead leaves or twigs that have clearly stopped growing. Snip them off with a pair of garden pruners whenever you see them.
Make sure you keep an eye out for weeds too while you are doing this. Get rid of them as soon as you can and try and get all the roots out as well.
Regular work is the key here otherwise you will become overrun with dead flowers and weeds very quickly indeed. Not only does this mean more work for you in one go when you do get out there, your garden won’t look as nice either. And just as your flowers and plants love the natural rainwater, so do your weeds! You will be surprised at how quickly they can grow if you let them.
You will need a good pair of hedge trimmers to keep those down as well. Even a well clipped hedge can go out of control in double quick time given the right weather conditions. Once again, a quick trim now and again when you have a few minutes to spare is a lot easier than trying to reshape a bush or hedge that has gone out of control.
As you get into the habit of doing this more and more, you will find that you enjoy it more as well. Snatching a few precious moments in your garden and ensuring that you enjoy them is what life is all about. And when you remove any flowers or other items that have run their course as well, this makes it easy to keep on top of things.
You will also have a garden you are proud to show off to other people!
