Are Women Better in the Garden than Men?

A recent survey by a well known brand of weed killer would seem to indicate that women are getting out into the garden more often to make sure it looks good. While some would traditionally see the garden as the place where men get to work, this may not be as true as they would previously have thought.

But which jobs are done by which sex? Apparently it’s the finer jobs such as creating nice displays, choosing plants for the hanging baskets and generally keeping the weeds down that women are best known for. When it comes to the bigger tasks such as putting up fences it’s the men who step up for the task.

It would be interesting to see whether it’s the men or women who think about picking up the hedge trimmer to tidy up the hedges though. This is a job that could be done by either sex because it is fairly easy to do. The great thing about modern hedge trimmers is that they are easy to handle and nice to use. Provided you read the instructions and you know what you are doing, they’re a breeze.

Perhaps this would be a better question – who would be tempted to cut their hedge into a nice shape or topiary? Okay so you would need more than just a little skill to do this, but I suspect it could be the fairer sex that would think about cutting nice shapes into the hedge here and there.

The good news is that the survey revealed more and more of us are enjoying some valuable time in the garden each month. With the state of the economy at the moment it can provide some cheap entertainment, with plants very cheap to buy – especially if you grow them from seed. The idea of nurturing various plants and watching those hedges establish themselves is probably more the realm of the female of the species. But it’s clear we all enjoy our time in the garden, whether we have cause to use hedge trimmers or not.
